Williamsburg 2-Day Major May 14-15.22
A lot of firsts!
First major of 2022, first 2-Day event, first out-of-state event and we are excited about it all!
When I lived in Richmond, VA, I spent a lot of time golfing in the Williamsburg area; when I decided on a 2-day event, I knew I wanted to show off a GREAT golf destination that wasn’t far from the Triangle
The field of 32 were met on Saturday with a true Mike Stranz gem! Inspirations of Irish links courses were only highlighted by the morning fog and light rain to start the round.
This layout was intimidating, frustrating, and so damn fun!
Day 2 brought out tricks of Pete Dye.
The River Course at Kingsmill Resort with a storied history of 38 PGA and LPGA events, as recent as 2021, packed a punch!
Concentration off the tee was needed but was only the beginning.. undulating fairways, fall-offs EVERYWHERE, and undulating greens took a tole on many scorecards!
The try treat was the finish; the approach into 16 introduced gorgeous river views and set the ton for the tough 17th par-3 and the stunning 18th hole!
Kurt Hayward & John Gagliano!
K. Hayward took 1st NET with a Tiger-esque 9 stroke Net margin.
After event scores this season of 86, 85, and 78, Kurt shot back-to-back 75’s;
This former scratch golfer took years away from the game and has come back; recently getting a lesson and finally finding his stride, he asserted his dominance in Virginia!
J. Gagliano took 1st Gross with +6, 149.
An underwhelming round of 77 at RNK placed him 2nd after day 1, but the -2, 34 on the front at Kingsmill brought him back!
1. Kurt Hayward (-9, 134)
2. Jake Olsen (E, 143)
1. John Gagliano (+6, 149)
2. Kurt Hayward* (+7, 150)
